Abstract
This paper explores the expectations of students undertaking the degree course in Osteopathy and their subsequent motivations and influences of the course. The paper focused on the student’s gender, age, and reasons for choosing Osteopathy. The aim of the study was to compare expectations of first year undergraduates (group 1) against postgraduate (group 2) experiences on an Osteopathic curricular level, and their motivations in choosing Osteopathy as a career. The paper also aimed to explore any regrets felt by group 2 after they had completed the course. Method: The subjects undertaking the degree course were thirty-nine subjects in group 1 and thirty-seven subjects in group 2, all from the British School of Osteopathy (BSO). Group 1 were given a questionnaire to complete regarding what they expected to be taught on the course. Group 2 were given a questionnaire to complete regarding what they felt they had been taught on the course. Both groups were asked their motivations for undertaking Osteopathy, their motivations were then categorised into age groups. Results: The expectations of group 1 matched group 2 in respect to the course curricular. Age group 18-25 and 36+ focused on “giving to others” as their motivation for studying Osteopathy, whereas age group 26-35 focused on “personal gain”. Age group 36+ was the largest group to be “influenced” into undertaking Osteopathy as a career. Regrets felt by group 2 after qualifying from the course were subdivided into positive and negative responses. Positive responses included sixteen subjects feeling no regrets, three subjects felt the course was an opening to continual learning and two subjects felt they should have done it years ago. Negative responses included four subjects with technique difficulties and three subjects who felt they were not prepared for Osteopathic life. Conclusion: This study indicates that subjects undertaking the course are guaranteed to have their expectations met, but are not guaranteed an “easy time”, with difficulties and frustrations occurring along the way. The motivations for studying Osteopathy could be ascribed to ones priorities in life, dependent on ones age.
