Objective
The aim of this study is to investigate the Christian-Methodist background of A. T.
Still's concept of "MAN IS TRIUNE". The secondary aim is a literary research about
the above quote.
Design
Literature study using context analysis, text comparison and text synopsis of the texts
published by A. T. Still and a compilation of texts published on „MAN IS TRIUNE“.
Sources
Primary sources are the books and articles published by A. T. Still. Secondary
sources are works on A. T. Still, on Christianity and Methodism.
Results
The quote „MAN IS TRIUNE“ appears twice in the books published by A.T. Still and
developed out of a Christian-Methodist background. This way A. T. Still tried to
demonstrate, that human beings originally are an image of their creator, Imago Dei of
the triune God.
The impression Christian-Methodist left on A.T.Still has been proved. The 19th
century „New Theology“ and John Wesley’s Methodism were influential.
Only a few authors have investigated A. T. Still's concept of "MAN IS TRIUNE". His
Christian-Methodist background has not been considered. Jane Stark interprets from
a spiritistic viewpoint; Carol Trowbridge finds Herbert Spencer („mind", „matter",
„force") as intellectual father of Still‘s ideas. W. A. Kuchera uses „MAN IS TRIUNE"
to underline the necessary unity of the different aspects of men in health and the
necessary unity of osteopathic science. And R. Paul Lee`s intention is to force all
different philosophies and religions into line with A. T. Stills „MAN IS TRIUNE"
Conclusion
„MAN IS TRIUNE" developed out of a Christian-Methodist background. Until now
there was no interpretation of „MAN IS TRIUNE" based on the Christian-Methodist
background, but on the spiritistic, theosophic and Spencerian background. Future
studies of A. T. Still’s texts should acknowledge the Christian context in order to get a
more complete view. It would be preferable to distinguish between speculations and

Das Zitat „MAN IS TRIUNE“ von A. T. Still soll primär auf dem christlich-methodistischen Hintergrund untersucht werden. Das sekundäre Ziel ist eine Literaturrecherche zu diesem Zitat.
Studiendesign:
Literaturstudium in Form einer Kontextanalyse, Textvergleiche und Textsynopsis an Hand der von A. T. Still veröffentlichten Texte und eine Zusammenstellung, der zu „MAN IS TRIUNE“ erschienenen Texte.
Quellen:
Primärquellen sind die von A. T. Still veröffentlichten Bücher und Artikel. Sekundärliteratur sind Schriften über A. T. Still, das Christentum und den Methodismus.
Ergebnisse:
Das Zitat „MAN IS TRIUNE“ kommt in den veröffentlichten Büchern von A. T. Still zweimal vor und ist auf christlich-methodistischem Hintergrund entstanden.
A. T. Still wollte so die ursprüngliche Bestimmung des Menschen zur Ebenbildlichkeit mit seinem Schöpfer, dem dreieinigen Gott, dem Imago Dei, versinnbildlichen. Die christlich-methodistische Prägung A. T. Stills konnte belegt werden. Dabei waren die „New Theology“ des 19. Jahrhunderts und John Wesleys Methodismus prägende Elemente.
Nur wenige Autoren haben bislang A. T. Stills Terminus „MAN IS TRIUNE“ untersucht. Sein christlich-methodistischer Hintergrund wurde dabei nicht berücksichtigt. Jane Stark interpretierte aus spiritistischer Sicht; Carol Trowbridge sieht Herbert Spencer („mind“, „matter“, „force“) als geistigen Vater der Still`schen Gedanken. W. A. Kuchera gebraucht „MAN IS TRIUNE“, um die für die Gesundheit notwendige Einheit der einzelnen Aspekte des Körpers mit der notwendigen Einheit der osteopathischen Wissenschaft zu untersteichen. Und R. Paul Lee ist es ein Anliegen, unterschiedliche Philosophien und Religionen mit A. T. Stills „MAN IS TRIUNE“ gleichzuschalten.
Schlussfolgerung:
„MAN IS TRIUNE“ ist auf christlich-methodistischem Hintergrund entstanden. Bislang wurde keine Interpretationen von „MAN IS TRIUNE“ auf christlichem Hintergrund vorgenommen, stattdessen auf spiritistischem, theosophischem und Spencer`schem Hintergrund.
Bei zukünftigen Untersuchungen der Texte von A. T. Still sollte der christliche Hintergrund miteinbezogen werden, um ein umfassendes Bild zu erhalten. Dabei wäre es wünschenswert, wenn zwischen spekulativen Aussagen und Stills Formulierungen unterschieden wird. - presented at
