Abstract
Introduction: Stress is an annoying emotional experience that is accompanied by predictable biochemical, physiological and behavioral changes that if they are not adapted or if the stressor persists causes chronic stress (CS), which is a frequent reason for query. Osteopathic manual treatment (OMT) acts in the parasympathic nervous system (PNS) causing a decrease in some of the physiological indices related to CS.Objective: Observe if cranial-cervical OMT is a good tool for patients with CS.Methodology: An experimental pilot study was conducted, with simple blinding. Twenty-four subjects of both sexs were recruited in an experimental group and control group, where a cranial-cervical OMT protocol was performed and the rates of: heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and the level of stress perceived where measure during 4 interventions of 20 minutes each one.
Results: A significant decrease in the level of perceived stress was observed in both groups. HR and systolic BP had a significant decrease in the control group and diastolic BP had no significant changes in either of the groups.
Conclusion: Although significant changes were observed, new research is needed to study the direct relationship between OMT and the decrease in these variables of CS.
