Abstract
Introduction:This study tried to demonstrate the effects of osteopathic specific jaw treatment on a tension-type headache symptomatology. And how did this affect the patient’s quality of life.
Method:: Pilot study involving 20 patients between 30 and 55 years of age diagnosed with ten- sion-type headache. The treatment was based on a treatment protocol consisting in the inhibition of the mastication muscles, following a precise order described by Philip Van Caille. This treatment was applied during five sessions. Prior to the first treatment and after the fifth, the patients responded to the McGill- Melzack and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaires, and the ROM was meas- ured before and after each session. A calendar of intensity of headaches during a month was performed.
Results:: An improvement in the EVA scale and the opening range of the mouth is observed post-treatment. The McGill - Melzack and PSS questionnaires also show favorable results in the study. The level of subjective stress, however, does not get any im- provement.
Conclusions: The application of the treatment protocol along the masticatory muscles promotes the reduction of the intensity of pain in the tension-type headache, and improves the mouth opening, improving the patient's quality of life.
