Abstract

Introduction: the aim of the study was to assess if osteopathic visceral treatment through the intestine viscerosomatic reflex improved pain, disability, quality of life and functionality in patients who were suffering low back pain and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Method: the quasi-experimental study without control group involved 16 patients. All patients were given 3 treatment sessions (3 weeks between each one) where the pelvic and thoracic diaphragm, the Treitz muscle, the duodenal angle and the mesentery root were treated. In each treatment session, they were asked to fill the questionnaires about functionality (PSFS), disability (Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire), pain (VAS) and quality of life (SF-36).
Results: between the previous first treatment and post third treatment results statistically significance were found in pain, disability and physical role part in quality of life questionnaire (p<0.05). There weren’t significant results (p> 0.05) in functionality scores.
Conclusions: Our study suggests that chosen osteopathic visceral treatment could improve pain, disability and physical role in quality of life in 6 weeks, and has not allowed us to demonstrate an improvement in functionality and remaining parts of the quality of life questionnaire.
