Abstract
Introduction: the prevalence of bruxism is 20% in the adult population. There is evidence of the relationship between craniomandibular dysfunction and chronic cervical pain. The objective of the study was to analyze changes in intensity of chronic cervical pain.
Methods: quasi-experimental study without control group and with a sample of 18 patients. The primary outcome was pain, measured with the Neck Disability Index (NDI). Secondary outcomes were articular range of mouth opening (RoM), measured with a sliding calliper, and quality of life (QoL), assessed by means of the SF-36 questionnaire.
Results: a significant increase of RoM between the 1st session and the 7th session (from 35.56 to 45.06), a significant reduction of chronic pain (from 20.28 to 7.56) and a significant improvement of the quality of life in the 8 items (all values with CI 95% and p<0.05) were observed.
Conclusions: osteopathic treatment with intraoral myofascial techniques improves the pain, the RoM and the QoL of the bruxing patients with chronic cervical pain aged between 20 and 50 years. Even so, stronger methodological studies are required to be able to extract conclusions that can be drawn for the whole population.
