Studiendesign

Problemdefinition
Grenzen

Abstract

Osteopathic curriculum, osteopathic syllabus, osteopathic education, comparison type I / type II osteopathic training programmes, content analysis of osteopathic curricula, standardisation of osteopathic curricula, Master in Osteopathy
Study Design
Empirical qualitative study with quantitative elements
Outline
With regard to legal recognition of osteopathy efforts have been made to standardise osteopathic training programmes. This study compares curricula of two European schools of osteopathy within this context.
Research Questions
Are there any similarities or differences between the curricula of the ESO and WSO? If so, which ones?
Methods
Content analysis is applied to identify and classify relevant data in the curricula. Most important is the development of a category system which allows comparing the curricula.
Results
The curricula are compared with regard to main categories, categories, teaching units, and courses. The number of categories representing fundamental medical and osteopathic knowledge as well as osteopathic skills is similar in both curricula. The number of teaching units is similar in the main category “Osteopathic Philosophy, Principles, Approaches and Techniques“. Within this main category the category “Articulatory and Thrust Techniques“ shows the highest number of teaching units in both curricula. In some courses, such as “Visceral Osteopathy“ and “Cranial Osteopathy“ as well as “General Osteopathic Treatment“ the amount of teaching units is very different in both curricula. Some courses are only taught at one school. These are at the ESO “Fundamentals of Osteopathy“, “Language of Osteopathy“, and “Principles of Osteopathy“. At the WSO these are “Clinical Osteopathy“ and “Osteopathic Concepts in Treatment“.
Limitations
This study compares only two curricula which represent different types of training.
Perspectives and Conclusions
In this pilot study a category system was developed. It can be applied in further studies with more schools regardless of a type I or type II training programme.
