Abstract
Objective
The objective of this study is to find out whether osteopathic treatment can influence the frequency and intensity of the baby’s screaming and provide the necessary relief to expand the periods of sleep.
Study Design
Clinical case study, retrospective, comparative, followed by statistical evaluation.
Method
Ten infants aged 0 to 120 days received osteopathic treatment in intervals of two to three weeks.
Two different questionnaires were used to assess the infant’s condition before the first treatment and up to three weeks after the second treatment.
The test group was compared to an equally large control group with a similar initial situation. Questionnaires were used for comparison.
Results
The results were statistically evaluated and presented in diagrams.
Conclusion
The osteopathically treated group showed the following, statistically significant changes.
significantly reduced frequency of crying attacks
significantly reduced duration and intensity of crying attacks
increasingly larger intervals between breastfeeding
Though a relatively small number of test persons was included in the study, the results clearly indicate a positive effect of osteopathic methods on three months colic, particularly with regards to crying habits. This effect is expressed in absolute numbers as well as in statistical tendency.
