Abstract
As a result of neurohumoral connections and changed metabolism, functional blocking in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine as well as in rib joints influences microcirculation and consequently changes the surface temperature of the skin.

The infrared thermogram of the back shows asymmetric courses of temperature as signs of spinal disorders. Depending on the type of disorder and pathogenesis, either the blood supply of the skin may decrease monosegmentally or regional hyperthermias may develop.

The effect of manipulation in the vertebral column was examined in 44 patients of both sexes at the age from 24 to 56 years. They mostly suffered from blocking in the thoracic spine as well as from disorders in costovertebral joints.

Successful manipulation was compared with one control group in which fixation was poorly handled but the coordinated movement was kept the same.

A computer-assisted infrared-thermography system (AGA) was used for imaging. Registration of the back‘s surface temperature was performed immediately before and after manipulation.

Successful manipulation led to an immediate change of the thermographic image, with a significant decrease in skin temperature (approx. by 32.81° F [0,45°C] ) not only in the area of manipulation but also reflectively on the whole back below this level.

In all test persons, failure of manipulation or poor fixation of the manipulated joint resulted in a slight increase in surface temperature due to local irritation.
