The mindful A.T. Still

Title
The mindful A.T. Still
Description
Hintergrund: Die moderne
Prinzipien durch A.T.

Still wiederfinden.

Konklusion: In seinen

Abstract
Background: The modern
interpretation of Andrew Taylor Still's philosophy deduces four fundamental
principles from his writings and therefore conveys a rather limited image of
his osteopathic ideas. However, due to A.T. Still's allegoric writing style the
osteopathic principles can only be read between the lines of his texts. The aim of this thesis is to offer a new
perspective for the discussion of further principles.

Method: Using a
qualitatively oriented content analysis, this research study has investigated
the question whether principles of
mindfulness can be found in selected texts by A.T. Still. The literature
research has resulted in the definition of four key qualities, which appear to
be prerequisites for the development of mindfulness. Accordingly, four categories
were deduced from these qualities and their frequency of occurrence in selected
writings by A.T. Still was studied. This analysis was guided by a definite
system of codification and done by the author of the thesis and a second
researcher. Subsequently, both researchers performed a joint analysis, on which
the presentation of results is based.

Results and Discussion: All of the
categories could be encoded in more than half of the original text material.
Therefore, the development of mindfulness can be assumed to be another
osteopathic principle. This hypothesis is reinforced by the fact that the
analysed text material exhibits several passages where the different qualities
of mindfulness were found in combination with each other. Furthermore, the comparison
of the original texts with the German translation indicates that certain
aspects of mindfulness were lost in the process of translation.

Conclusion: A.T. Still's
writings encourage his students to develop all four key qualities of
mindfulness. Hence, the experience of mindfulness cannot only enhance the
understanding of the osteopathic principles but also of Still's character.
