The Role of the Parents in Osteopathic Care of Infants within the First Three Months of Life from the Parents’ and Practitioners’ Perspectives
Description

Abstract
Background: Osteopathic treatment of infants represents a central field of osteopathy. The parents' importance is emphasized in many textbooks, the role of the parents during the treatment is hardly scientifically proven. Objective: To assess from both the parents‘ and the practitioners‘ perspectives how parents feel during the treatment of their baby, how they are informed, in how far they are included in the treatment and what osteopaths may improve to improve understanding on both sides.Methodology: The present study is a qualitative study. Ten interviews with parents and osteopaths were carried out with the help of interview guidelines, and analyzed by means of a qualitative analysis of contents using the software ATLAS.ti.Results: Both sides agreed that parents are always involved in the treatment of their baby. The most important aspect for parents is the trust in the practitioner. Explanations and instructions are considered helpful, and a good communication between parents and osteopaths is the most important aspect of the interaction. The views of parents and osteopaths differed regarding expectations and possible insecurities of the parents.Discussion: For osteopaths it is important to always make themselves aware of how important it is for the infant's health that the parents feel comfortable. Different attitudes regarding issues like time management, treatment of the parents, and manner of communication do not contradict each other but rather illustrate the variety of osteopathic treatment options. What is important is that parents' opinions are accepted and considered with respect and without judgment. Keywords:parents, infants, osteopathy, qualitative study
