Abstract
Background: Migraines are considered mainly as primary headaches and are classified into two main types: migraine with aura and migraine without aura. Migraine is ranked second in causes of years lived due to a disability (YLD) worldwide in 2016. Research shows that osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) brings significant improvement in patients affected by migraines and therefore is a credible method in treating migraines. Qualitative research has shown to provide insight to everyone’s unique perspective. This allows patients to express their attitudes towards their migraines and osteopathy. Objective: To provide insight on patients experience and perspective towards OMT when being treated for migraines and give awareness to other osteopaths of these perspectives. Design: A Phenomenological Qualitative Approach. Methods: Sampling was chosen on a convenience sampling basis. A topic guide was written in terms of addressing the research title and was refined after pilot study. There were a total of 5 semi-structured interviews that took place. Data analysis followed a thematic analysis approach were themes emerged from the interviews. A framework model was then made to link the themes together. Results: Due to a limited timeline for the research to take place, data saturation did not occur in this study. Themes that emerged were 1) Patients’ attitude towards their migraines 2) Effect of migraines on patients 3) Patients opinion regarding the medical practice 4) Patients opinion on osteopathy 5) Self-management 6) Patients’ views of alternative medicine. The framework model looks at the interventions such as osteopathy or medical practice and how that interplays with the patient’s attitudes and perception of their pain. Discussion: Migraine is one of the most debilitating neurological problems worldwide. The word “debilitating was used by participants in this study. Osteopathy seemed to have a positive effect and experience from the participants of this study. Although there is limited research, osteopathy seems to have a positive impact on migraines with decreasing intensity and frequency. Conclusion: Participants have had a positive opinion on osteopathy. They seemed to prefer the holistic approach to their migraines rather than medication. More qualitative research in this domain should take place to have more research for validity.
