Abstract
Background: The biopsychosocial (BPS) model encompasses contributing factors to pain such as behavioural, psychological and social factors. Osteopathic principles are consistent with the BPS model, which is recommended by European guidelines as more effective than the biomedical model. These psychosocial factors have been proven to have a significant influence on patients’ perception and treatment outcomes. Yet studies show manual therapists do not have the confidence to address these factors. Osteopathic educational institutions are vital to shape attitudes and beliefs of practitioners. There is limited knowledge on how recently graduated osteopaths view and use the BPS model. Objective: To investigate if there is any correlation between osteopaths’ education and their attitudes and beliefs towards the BPS model. Design & Methods: This is a quantitative study using the ABS-mp questionnaire, investigating personal attitudes and treatment orientation of practitioners. All osteopaths registered with GOsC who have graduated within the past 4 years (n=412) were contacted via email invitation. Results: A total of 86 (20.8%) responses from 9 different osteopathic schools were analysed. Significant difference was found in Kruskal-Wallis test with significance set at 5% in “psychological” (p=0.0417) and “connection to health care system” (p=0.0459) sections of the ABS-mp questionnaire. Steel test with UCO as a control group showed significant difference with Swansea University (p=0.0176) and LSO (p=0.0283). Analysis of the bespoke section concluded that respondents found the BPS model relevant (93%) and were often using it in their diagnosis. Discussion: Respondents scored similar results on the psychological aspect of the ABS-mp questionnaire compared to a previous study on primary care physicians. Respondents from this study followed the recent guidelines, in contrast to other studies. There is a lack of consistency within the research about the BPS model and its definition consequently affecting education. Lack of training and education is still one of the biggest barriers reported, thus new ways of teaching might be needed to implement these psychosocial factors better. Conclusion: This study suggested that the attitudes and beliefs of osteopaths who have recently graduated are in line with the research on the BPS model and adhered to recent clinical guidelines. The place of education did not influence osteopaths’ responses, however, further research is needed to investigate the integration of the BPS model in the curricula and its educational aims.
