Abstract
Background Various levels of pelvic floor dysfunction are common after childbirth and most women seem ready to put up with the effect this can have on their quality of life, however it has been questioned as to whether preventative measures could be undertaken to reduce or entirely avoid these issues. Up to now, research has not seemed consistent or definite in establishing the validity of such oreventative methods. Objective This research project was conducted with the aim of synthesising and critically appraising the more recent research regarding the potential benefits of pelvic floor muscle training as a preventative measure to pelvic floor dysfunction after giving birth. ln addition to this, its goal was to clarify how this can be made clinically significant for osteopathic practitioners, as well as to emphasise the importance for further research in this field. Design This study was conducted with the aim of composing a structured literature review. Methods 4 databases were used in the research process, and scrutinised for literature published in between 2012 and 2017 (included). The search results were further filtered using the inclusion and exclusion criteria which had previously been drawn up in order to gage better search outcomes to answer the research question adequately. All in all, six-papers ended up meeting the suitable criteria for this study. The relevant data which responded to the aforementioned inclusion and exclusion criteria was extracted with the help of a table, and then further analysed using the Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) and JADAD assessment scales for evaluation of the material's quality. Results Out of the six studies, four were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and the remaining two were systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials. Discussron Results in these studies were limited by various factors, mainly pertaining to the difficulty in establishing objective outcome measures to compare results to, leading to an inconclusive outcome for the benefit of undertaking a preventative pelvic floor muscle training exercise regimens. This could also be due to the fact that not all available methods were described within these studies, and further research would be necessary to asceftain whether different types of programmes could be more effective. Conclusions This piece of research of the recent literature regarding pelvic muscle training has strongly emphasised the difficulties of providing clear, consistent results in these types of studies due to the circumstances which encompass childbirth and the following sequence of events. lndeed, this type of data is highly subjective and it can be hard to scientifically assess. Moreover, the various studies pointed out that new mothers make unreliable subjects for studies, making it even harder to draw conclusive results.
