Abstract
Introduction: the ankle sprain injury is very common in sport, with a high rate of relapse. They tried to show the efficacy of the osteopathic approach, doing axis and cuboid manipulations to ultrasonography (US). The hypothesis was that the osteopathic approach would improve the variants proposed while US therapy wouldn’t be so effective. Methods: a pilot study was conducted with two groups of 20 patients. In the control group there was an intervention by US for 5 minutes al 0.2 HZ, three sessions during a week. The intervention group received an osteopathic approach with high velocity techniques (HVLA), in axis and cuboid. Variables as mobility were measured with goniometer, pain were measured with VAS and proprioception were measured with “Star Leg Proprioception”
Results: for planta flexion (FP), the experimental group increased by 75% while the control 40%. For dorsal flexion (FD), the control group improved by 35% whereas the experimental did 60%. For pain, the control group showed a 45% decline while the experimental 80%. For proprioception, the results were not significant.
Conclusion: osteopathic treatment (C2 and cuboid manipulation) shows significant improvements in all variables except proprioception.
