- Abstract
- Background The thoughts and experiences shared between cranial practitioners and spiritual healers (SHs) have not been documented or compared. There is little research that has understood either professions, or their experiences. Objective The objectives of the study were to identify common themes between the two modalities, as well as to explore and analyse personal perceptions between the two groups Design A qualitative approach with a phenomenological model was used. Methods The researcher used semi-structured interviews on seven participants from the different professions. 6-10 individuals, three spiritual healers (SHs) and four cranial practitioners. The participants' requirement criteria included: practicing in either profession for over one year, qualified within the UK and accredited by a regulating body. The data were audio recorded, anonymised, transcribed and analysed following a thematic frame work. Results Seven individuals were interviewed. The final data was composed of six major themes: Practitioner Development, clinical competence, External lnfluences, Treatment Approach, Treatment Experience and patient Perception. As well as 20 subthemes. Discussion The results were discussed in the context of wider literature. The main findings were that the two professions shared a similar view on some of the themes, including interpersonal skills and highlighting the importance of communication. However, each had their own personal interpretation of their selected profession. Conclusion Further research is required on the effectiveness and also the mechanism of how each profession works. As well as further exploration into practitioners motives, attitudes and experiences to gain further knowledge which can help with osteopathic education and referrals between the two professions.
