Abstract
Background Balanced Ligamentous tension technique (BLf) a treatment modality used in the wider Osteopathic profession that claims to restore the state of balance in the body by use of the ligaments and myofascial structures. Joint ROM is limited by the bony structure ligaments, muscles and joint capsules. There was no published research found on the technique, only grey literature in the form of dissertations. Obiective: To review osteopathic grey literature in the form of dissertations from the European School of Osteopathy, on the effects of a Balanced Ligamentous Tension technique on range of motion and to assess the quality of the relevant literature Design: : Structured literature review. Method: A comprehensive search was carried out on the European School of Osteopathy library database Soutron for relevant gray literature. The titles, abstracts and full text of each study was evaluated against the inclusion and  exclusion criteria. Studies that met the criteria were selected then critically appraised on methodological quality by the Downs and Black checklist for randomized and non-randomized control trials. Results: 30 studies were identified by the search strategy. 12 studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were included in the review. 8 out of the 12 studies showed that a BLT technique increased ROM. The general quality of the studies used in this review is moderate with a median score of 17/27. Discussion: There is general a high risk of bias to do with randomisation, blinding and allocation concealment in the studies reviewed, therefore affecting the quality and bearing of the research. The small sample sizes increased the chances of a type ll error and affected the reliability of the studies used. Generally the tools and devices used to measure ROM were considered valid and reliable. Conclusion: BLT may have an effect on ROM. The studies used are of moderate quality. Patient population, study sample size and power, and bias were the most prominent factors that were highlighted to have affected the quality of the chosen studies, hence difficulty in drawing a strong link between BLT and ROM. Further research is warranted
