Abstract
Introduction: Osteopathy is a manual therapy involved with treating musculoskeletal issues and a wide variety of disorders looking at the person as a whole. Professional singers subject their bodies to high levels of demand and stress whereby osteopathy can help However there is a lack of evidence regarding osteopaths' experiences in treating singers and how osteopathy can meet those needs.Methodology: A qualitative approach with a phenomenological model was used. The researcher used semi-structured interviews for data gathering. Eight participants were selected using purposive sampling for this project. The data were audio-recorded, anonymized, transcribed and analyzed using a thematic framework. Results: Six main themes emerged from the data: motivation for osteopathic treatment, osteopaths' discoveries and challenges, treatment approaches used by participants, what osteopathy has to offer to singers and finally osteopaths' perception about their evolution. Participants were explaining in what ways singers needs are different, and what approach they use to meet those needs. They were also sharing their discoveries of treating the voice and how it can be used from a therapeutic aspect. They were reporting their difficulties regarding the musical language, precise anatomy and the therapeutic relationship including communication and boundary keeping. They reflected on how they changed their approaches with experience. They were also inclined to say that osteopathy is a therapy which has a lot to offer to singers. Discussion: The current project showed that osteopaths treat singers with respect and awareness of their special needs and expectations including the psycho-emotional aspects that may be tied to their performance related injuries. Singers' issues are reported in the literature as well as the importance of posture and mind-body awareness However, research is lacking to ascertain the beneficial effect of osteopathic treatment on signers and to investigate osteopaths' experience in treating singers. Conclusion: Further research is needed to provide a better understanding of osteopathy's interaction with the professional singer and what it involves in terms of challenges, rewards and overall experience for practitioners willing to treat performers.
