Abstract
Background: Sleep disorders and sleeplessness are common complaints throughout modern society, ones that have significant implications for public health. With so many treatments for sleep on the market, it is hard for an individual to choose the most effective solution. Manual therapy is one mtreatment approach that may aid in disrupted sleep patterns. Objectiv: The aim of this study is to; review the current literature (>1998), to evaluate current understanding of manual therapy and its impact on sleep, to compare the types of intervention used, to explore data collection (how the studies monitor sleep) and what outcome measures were used, and to score and conclude the chosen topic evidence. Design- Structured literature review. Methodology: Studies were found using relevant search terms over five databases, including the criteria of: professional health care providers (Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Sports Therapist, Massage Therapist, and Occupational Therapist), studies involved all age ranges, English language, or translated studies, full text articles, human participants, and studies published in or after 1998. Each study was then summarised onto a table, and further analysed with Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) and JADAD scale to determine the quality. Results: Twelve studies on the chosen topic were retrieved. Of the ten RCT and two pilot studies, eleven of the twelve studies showed an improvement in sleep patterns, when manual therapy was used. These studies scored a modal score of 2b in SORT, while JADAD recorded mixed results. Nine different methods for monitoring sleep were found among the trails. Discussion: A number of differences arose between the studies, which included; participant number, age, interpretation skills, methodological quality and outcome/summary of findings. This led to difficulties when comparing and analysing the studies, due to the number of variances encountered. The author did not anticipate these variances when first considering the research topic; however must now shows acknowledgment towards the prospect of gaps in the literature This finding may open and aid the direction of future research. Conclusion: Manual therapy appears to be beneficial in the treatment of disrupted sleep patterns both qualitatively and quantitatively. However, the body of research shows deficiencies in the study design and reporting, making analysis/comparison difficult. Concluding further studies are needed to investigate manual therapy with regards to sleep patterns.
