Abstract
Background: There is a distinct lack of studies into the way canine osteopathy is seen by those who may choose to use it, and the reasons why it is possibly less common than other similar forms of manual therapy. Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the role of canine osteopathic treatment on the performance of agility dogs and the opinions of its efficacy when compared with other forms of treatment. Design: The study performed was a cross-sectional questionnaire study, specific to the population of agility dog owners, with primary data gathering done by an anonymous, observational questionnaire. Methods: Participants were invited to complete the questionnaire via a specific group for agility enthusiasts on the social media site ‘Facebook', with an information sheet and inclusion criteria attached The questionnaire was designed to gain information on participant characteristics, experience and opinions of osteopathy (human and canine), the role it plays in the sport dog agility, and awareness of canine osteopathy. Data were analysed using chi- squared. Results: Questionnaires were completed by 183 individuals. Respondents had generally positive attitudes towards canine osteopathy, however only 22% had used it for their agility dog Results showed that a greater proportion of those who had experienced canine osteopathy were male, aged 30+ and not a student, compared with the group who had not. There was shown to be an increased need for canine treatment when the owner had been involved in agility for over 2 years Those who had experienced osteopathy (canine or human) were more likely to also have experienced other treatments, and those who had experienced physiotherapy were more likely to have also used osteopathy.
