Abstract
Background: There is a demand for research into not only the quality of life (QoL) factors in asthma, but highlighting whether or not osteopathic intervention influences these symptoms. This study investigates into the experiences of asthmatic patients and to observe delivers a secondary effect on asthma symptoms. Objectives: * Conduct an analysis into what are the experiences of asthmatic patients with regards to their initial injury being managed by osteopathic treatment and management, comparing to National Health Service (NHS) treatment. * Observe how patients feel about osteopathic treatment and whether it improved/worsened asthma control in terms of QoL, encapsulating individual meaningful changes. * To find out which of these QoL parameters manor to patients that could be used as outcome measures in future clinical trials. * Whether a minimally important difference (MID) in those parameters could indicate a successful osteopathic intervention to those patients. Design: A qualitative phenomenological design-based study with a combined inclusion/exclusion tailored questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Methods: A short questionnaire was applied in order to enforce the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather the data, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and anonymised. Nine participants were sampled through convenience and snowball selection. Data was analysed and interpreted using a thematic framework and conceptual data modelling. Results: Participants' highlighted that their initial injuries were adequately addressed by osteopathic treatment in comparison to NHS treatment. In the majority of subjects, osteopathic intervention affecting asthma symptoms was deabated, though concluded that sleep quality and stress/anxiety were the most important QoL factors. Discussion: The study highlighted a psychological attribute in asthma, alongside sleep and stress/anxiety as important QoL parameters. This was reflected by individuals' perceptions of their asthma, followed by coping mechanisms, and interchangeable regulation in their QoL. Future research is warranted into QoL factors in asthma in relation to osteopathic intervention. Conclusion: Osteopathic intervention for asthma treatment and management has the potential to work in conjunction with pharmaceutical intervention in order to offset future asthma exacerbations and improve QoL parameters; sleep quality and stress/anxiety in asthmatic patients.
