Abstract
Background: There is currently no well-established referral pathway between the professions in the UK Both professions treat a similar range of musculoskeletal issues and a referral pathway between the two maybe beneficial to the patient. This study looks at how the perceptions of physiotherapists towards osteopathy influence the potential of an established referral pathway between the two professions. Objective: This study investigates how the perceptions held by physiotherapists influence the choice of referral and what factors influence the perception held by physiotherapists towards osteopathy. Design: A grounded theory study using face to face, semi-structured interviews using pre-planned questions. Methods: Participant inclusion criteria was based on qualified and practicing physiotherapist in the private or public sector and the exclusion criteria was any other medical practitioner other than physiotherapists. Participants had a broad range of experience and worked predominantly in a musculoskeletal field. Data was analysed using a thematic framework and codes were developed and refined. Results: 6 principle themes and 41 sub themes were identified These were the Perception of treatment Personal experience of osteopathy, Knowledge of treatment modality, Understanding of osteopathic training, Experience of referral and Miscellaneous. Discussion: The key elements identified by this study that affect referral of patients to osteopathy are the perception of professional identity and the role that the NHS plays towards providing a referral pathway. For a strong referral pathway to be established, better understanding and cooperation between the two professions must be developed. Conclusion: This study provides an insight into the perceptions held by physiotherapists and starts to introduce reasons for and against referral to osteopathy. It could lead to further research as to other health care providers and their perceptions towards osteopathy which could help to establish a higher profile of osteopathy for the healthcare industry.
