Abstract
Background: Manual therapy for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea is discussed mainly within studies focusing on spinal manipulation or a global osteopathic approach including a whole range of different techniques. Objectives: This study tested the hypotheses that a significant difference exists between the effects of structural and visceral osteopathic techniques on pain and medication intake reported by primary dysmenorrhea sufferers over the course of one cycle treatment. This tested also if osteopathic techniques have an effect compared to a control. Design: This study was a randomized controlled trial. Method: Participants recruited were students attending the European school of Osteopathy aged 18-35, and were screened for inclusion (regular cycles and pain scores >3 on the Mankoski pain scale for more than a year) and exclusion (pregnancy, history of urogenital disease and recent surgery) criteria Participants were allocated into three groups (structural, visceral and control). They recorded their pain on a pain scale one month prior treatment and after they had received two treatments in one cycle The Mankoski pain scale was used to rate the pain experienced. Medication diaries were kept in both groups. Results : Upon statistical analysis using Analyse IT software with a significance level set at p<0.05, a Kruskal Wallis test was performed. The results indicated a p=O.25 which indicated no statistical significance between the groups. Microsoft excel was used to create tables for anthropometric data (age and BMI) and graphs to analyze medication intake, these looked at the type and amount of medication. Conclusion : With the limitations of the study, the study accepted the null hypothesis HO (p
