Abstract
Background: Myofascial trigger points (MTrP) have been shown to cause pain and decrease range of motion (ROM). Various manual therapy techniques have been shown to increase the range of motion and to reduce pain when pain pressure threshold (PPT) is being measured These changes are often seen immediately after the intervention is applied However there is very little research into what effect these treatments have on muscle tone. The main techniques examined include ischemic compression (IC), muscle energy technique (MET), dry needling and cross fibre frictional stretches. Objective: To determine whether; (i) the muscle tone changes when either MET or IC is applied to MTrPs in the triceps surae muscle group, (ii) to determine whether the PPT changes in correlation with the muscle tone. Design: This was a randomized controlled trial. Participants were randomly placed into either an intervention group (IC or MET) or the control group Muscle tone was recorded and PPT both pre and post intervention. Results: The results showed no significant difference between pre and post intervention data (P<0.05). All data sets showed the p-value>0.05. However comparing the mean averages of pre and post intervention data implied that whilst there was no significant difference, the intervention groups saw a greater difference than the control group. Discussion: Although there was no significant difference, the intervention groups did show a slight decrease in muscle tone and a slight increase in PPT. This could indicate that PPT and muscle tone are inversely related. More in depth research needs to be conducted to determine this however. The mechanisms behind MET and IC also need more research as the mechanisms proposed in the literature currently consist of theories that have not been proven. Conclusion: In the context of this current study, MET and IC do not have any significant difference upon the muscle tone of the triceps surae group after a single intervention, however more research needs to be conducted.
