Abstract
Background: Low back pain (LBP) is considered common among equestrian riders. Little research has been carried out on differing occurrences of LBP across equestrian disciplines and contributing factors Objective: Determine if the occurrence of LBP varies between professional riders across a variety of equestrian disciplines including dressage, showjumping, eventing and racing and identify factors predisposing to LBP. Design: A comparative observational study using a cross-sectional questionnaire approach. Methods: A questionnaire compiled on Google Forms collected data from participants. LBP sufferers also completed the Bournemouth Low Back Pain Questionnaire (BQ). Administration was to professional riders over 18 years old specializing in dressage, showjumping, racing or eventing. Discipline and percentage of participants suffering LBP were compared amongst other variables. Data was analysed on Microsoft Excel and Analyse-IT. Results: The general population displays a higher BQ rating in comparison to the rider group. Significant differences between equestrian groups and LBP were found (p<0.0005). Racing showed highest incidences of LBP and BQ rating. Statistical differences were found between type of saddle used and LBP (P<0.0004). Use of racing or jumping saddles presented highest reports of LBP. Significant differences were found between high overall injury rates and discipline (P<0.0006) and additional yard work carried out and discipline (P
