Abstract
Background: Manual therapies such as osteopathy, chiropractic and physiotherapy are commonly used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions There is, however, no official definition of the differences between the professions. Patients are therefore reliant on the views and opinions of practitioners when choosing a professional. With the creation of video sharing websites like YouTube, practitioners are utilising this tool to express their opinions on an array of topics including their professions and what. Objective: To explore the views, opinions and experiences of registered osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists on the inter-professional differences between the three professions in the United Kingdom (UK) as expressed in videos uploaded to YouTube. Design: A qualitative discourse analysis Methods: Videos of osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists comparing professional differences and that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected via a search of YouTube. Videos were then transcribed manually and raw audio data was analysed using a thematic framework to develop themes and sub-themes Comparisons were also made between the characteristics of the videos and the subsequent effect on video popularity. Results: 18 YouTube videos were collected; 8 osteopaths, 5 chiropractors and 4 physiotherapists 7 high order themes and 28 sub-themes were derived from the thematic analysis The more frequently viewed videos generally had better camera quality than seldom viewed videos; used a ‘face to camera' setting and employed the use of graphics and advertising. Discussion: The wider literature appeared to support the idea of the importance of the individual practitioner over a specific profession. Within the UK, there appears to be conflicting notions amongst practitioners, to merge the three professions or to protect professional identity. Intra professional differences were seen to be far more complex than merely personal preference of technique. Differences in of attitude created divides within the professions themselves. Conclusion: In general, the effort a practitioner puts into the development of their YouTube video, the more their opinion and business is promoted These opinions appear to be a divided, whereby, the drive for a merging that incorporates aspects of all disciplines is counteracted by a desire for professional independence and tradition.
