Abstract
A quantitative research project was carried out to answer the whether Balance Ligamentous Tension techniques can elicit a change in an individuals gait cycle. The ankle complex was chosen as the joint to test as it is one of the most pivotal joints in weight bearing, balance and proprioception for an individual. The highly scientific diagnostic tool of Gait analysis was used to measure the independent variable as it allows accurate readings of ankle function during the functional process of gait cycle. A null hypothesis was set that _There will be no Statistical Significant difference in Heel angle after a Balance Ligamentous Tension technique is applied compared to a control group_. This hypothesis was tested with a sample of 20 European School of osteopathy students with their Heel angle being measured during a gait cycle at 4km/h. The left leg received the intervention whereas the right leg was treated as the control. A significant change in heel angle was seen from pre to post in the group that received the Balance Ligamentous Tension intervention however this was not statistically significant compared to the change recorded in Heel angle of the control group. Therefore a null hypothesis of _no Statistical Significant difference in Heel angle after Balance Ligamentous Tension is applied compared to a control group_ has been accepted. After reviewing the project the researcher found that the variance between each data set was too high which led to there being difference between the control and intervention, this was due to inaccuracies in the measuring of the heel angle and ineffective application of the Balance Ligamentous Tension technique. Further research into the area of Balance Ligamentous Tension and Heel angles must be carries before any final conclusions can be formed.
