Abstract
"A Comparison of academic stress levels, between nurses and osteopathic students."Introduction Stress is a global issue as it is reported all over the world. However the medical schools are known to be highly demanding within stressful learning environments. The relationship of stress and medical education is hyped because the students personality suggests that they are highly motivated, action oriented achievers. Considering the facts that stress is a common presentation among medical students, this investigation will be carried out to examine the effect of osteopathic training on academic stress level in undergraduate students. This cohort study will investigate different way of reporting academic level of stress among two professions - Baccalaureate nursing students and undergraduate osteopathic students at the ESO. As a part of this cohort study I will also examine how students of osteopathy report level of academic stress, and whether there is an differences between a year of study or an academic term and level of stress imposed. Method Gadzella's Student-life Stress Inventory (SSI), a measure of academic stress level were administered to all undergraduate students at the European School of Osteopathy. 53 students completed and returned a questionnaire in the 3th term 2012/2013 and 67 students completed online survey in 1st term 2013/2014 year. The Student-life Stress Inventory questionnaire assesses personal and academic stress level is composed of 51 items which are divided into two major sections: types of stressors and reaction to stressors. It has been used in numerous studies to measure college students’ stress and to determine the reliability and validity of the instrument (Gadzella, 1991, 1994). Results The results of the current study indicates significant statistical differences in reporting perceptions of stress between Baccalaureate nursing students and undergraduate osteopathic students at ESO. Regarding to osteopathic student, examination revealed significant statistical differences in reporting level of stress between groups divided by: year of study, nationality and gender. Conclusion The primary outcome form this cohort study further validate levels and types of stressors in baccalaureate nursing students.
