Abstract
Aim: Complementary and alternative medicines offer a large and diverse variety of animal therapies. This study was conducted to investigate the physiological effects of three animal therapies on the nervous system of dogs. Among those, Osteopathy, Bowen technique and massage therapy were examined for this undergraduate project. This canine study also aimed to determine the most effective treatment approach, in terms of promoting parasympathetic nervous activity. Methodology: This study used a prospective A-B-A-B single system research design with a multiple baseline. The experimentation was conducted over a period of six weeks, in which three experiment sessions were planned. This investigation used three dogs. Each dog received two out of three proposed treatment approaches. Treatment reaction on the parasympathetic nervous system was measured via the heart rate. The heart rate is considered to be a good tool for measuring autonomic nervous system activity. The measurements were made manually, by placing a hand over the heart with the dog lying on their right hand side. Results: Data analysis revealed a significant difference in the parasympathetic nervous activity of dogs after receiving osteopathic treatment. With regards, to Bowen Technique and massage therapy, the results were more contrasted. Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that Osteopathy was the most effective treatment approach in term of relaxation for your dog. The Bowen technique also showed to have a noticeable effect on dogs compared to massage therapy. However, further research needs to be executed, using other measurement tools to record the nervous activity as well as bigger sample of subjects.
