Abstract
Aim A narrative literature review of research conducted between 2002 and 2012 to explore the strengths and weaknesses of Problem Based Learning in teaching competence to undergraduate health care students and to consider its possible use within an Osteopathic Educational Institute in the UK. Method Search terms were entered into EBSChost's Educational Databases, Health Science Research Databases and Life Sciences Databases. The abstracts of the resulting articles were read and those that fell within the inclusion criteria were kept. These articles were then read in full and again those that fell within the inclusion criteria were kept to discuss and critically analyse. Conclusion There is no reason why PBL should be implemented if a school is already establishing the desired clinical reasoning abilities within students, however future reviews investigating other areas of competence through the implementation of PBL may suggest that it is a definite benefit or hindrance
