- Abstract
- Introduction The research dissertation contributes an important part-requirement for accreditation of the M.Ost degree in osteopathy. An interest lay in final year student perspectives during the lived experience of writing an undergraduate dissertation. The purpose of the study was to qualitatively explore the factors constituting a successful dissertation experience and their impact on student attitudes in the context of evidence based practice. Methods The study employed a phenomenological framework and followed the gold standard check-list for conducting qualitative research using focus groups (CORED guide lines), Four focus groups were conducted at three separate osteopathic education institutions (OEls) (ESQ / BSO / BCOM). Purposive sampling facilitated recruitment of 27 participants; all fourth year undergraduate osteopathic students in the process of completing the M.Ost dissertation, Four emergent themes were derived from thematic analysis of focus group Discussion The study highlighted a multitude of positive and negative experiences dependent on situational and dispositional variables. Aids to a successful dissertation experience were nominally good communication and co-operation with peers, staff and supervisors. Difficulties arose from conflict in the 'student- supervisor relationship', in addition to limitations of time management, ethical approval, resources and uncertainty in institutional expectations for M.Ost Conclusion All counter-parts of the dissertation experience to significantly influence student opinions and attitudes towards the purpose of research for the osteopathic profession.
