Abstract
Objectives: This is a study to identify the extent to which the osteopathic community uses the Internet This encompasses utilising it as a health information resource as well as the growing use of social networking sites and mobile phone apps as platforms for this information, including the perception of osteopathy by its proponents. Background: The Internet is a core source of information on health. Within primary health care in the UK osteopathy is a small but growing community. With such an easily accessible and increasingly large resource of information on the Internet osteopaths need to be aware of the quality and content of information available so as to gain accurate, evidence based information in order to assist the growth of their own practice as well as the well being of their patients Method: A questionnaire was designed online to collect qualitative data from students of osteopathy and qualified osteopaths It was distributed electronically in September and October of 2012. Questions covered demographic details, use of the Internet, use of mobile phone apps and attitudes to information relating to health and osteopathy on the Internet Results: The questionnaire was sent to 288 students and qualified osteopaths. There was a response rate of 52.08%, or 150 responses. Gender was equally rated and the average age of respondents was 26. The majority of respondents were students of osteopathy (57.7%). It was found statistically significant that osteopaths found information relating to health and osteopathy on the Internet useful and that there should be more information made available (p< 0.05), however, the information on the internet was not considered either accurate enough or evidence based. Conclusion: Both student osteopaths and working osteopaths utilise the Internet for information on health and osteopathy; osteopaths agree that as a source of information the Internet and the modem applications to access it (smartphones and apps) are important in disseminating information, although the accuracy of the information obtained should be viewed with caution due to the lack of quality assurance and evidence based knowledge and criteria
