The purpose of this Bachelor ´s Thesis was to gather information about panic disorder and reach better understanding of a patient with this condition. Moreover the aim of the study was to investigate what factors need to be taken into account when encountering a patient with panic disorder at an osteopathic clinic.
The subject was mapped by sending an e-survey to practicing osteopaths about experiences in treating patients with panic disorder. Information was also gathered from literature and by interviewing three health care specialists, one experienced osteopath and three patients with panic disorder. Two of the patients were also treated with osteopathic methods at Positia student clinic at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. Based on the experiences, a recommendation was made on encountering a patient with panic disorder.
It was discovered that panic disorder is almost always combined with one or more other diseases. The most problematic feature seemed to be that the disorder sustains and reinforces itself by the patient being constantly afraid of a new panic attack. When encountering a patient with panic disorder it is important to remember that every person with this disorder is different and needs to be dealt with individually. Calm behavior and approval of the patient are important features in creating a safe and reliable atmosphere for the interaction and treatment.
Successful treatment requires a health care professional’s skill to encounter a patient with panic attack disorder individually. Patients involved in this study benefitted from osteopathic treatment, but to draw reliable conclusions of influence of the treatment on panic disorder requires further and more controlled studies.
