Abstract
An Experimental study comparing Muscle Energy Technique versus Sustained Stretchingapplied to the Scalene Muscles, and their effect on Cervical Rotation. Background_The use of Muscle energy technique and sustained stretch has been used by Osteopaths for a long time in order to increase muscle extensibility. It is also used on muscles in order to improve range of motion of joints, however there is littleliterature to support the effects of this. This project aims to ascertain whether these technique when applied to the scalene muscle increase cervical range of motion. Also to find out which technique is more effective. Study Design_ A single blind study involving 32 females and 28 males from the ESQ student population where split into 5 groups. The technique groups were split into two groups depending on which side the technique was performed on. Therefore MET had 2 groups, SS had 2 groups and there was 1 control group. The MET and SS groups had the technique performed only on one set of scalenes by the author. 3 Readings of cervical range of motion were taken also by the author before and after and a mean reading was taken. Results_ Data analysis showed a significant difference in cervical range of motion after both SS and MET were applied but no significant difference in the control group was found. However no statistical difference between the effectiveness of MET and SS were found.
