Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine a technique that is most effective atdecreasing muscle tone in the therapeutic sense. The study examined tonicity changes found in Lumbar Erector Spinae (LES) muscles after either functional inhibition (Fl) or Soft Tissue Technique was applied to the area. For accurate measurement of the tissue displacement a Myotonometer (EMT) device was used. Participants (n=60) were randomly assigned one of three groups; Fl, STT or CONTROL The participants was firstly measured using the set procedure and protocol and then underwent the selected group technique or controlled setup. The data was measured using the EMT and gave results of total tissue displacement (mm) under 2kg of perpendicular force and also the Total Area under curve achieved of the displacement over time until 2kg of force had been reached. The Data underwent within groups and between-groups significance analysis after first calculating equal variances and distribution. The significance was assessed with a confidence level of 95%. It was found that of the 10 positions tested 3 made significant increases in tissue displacement (p>0.05) after undergoing Fl. No significant differences were found for the Control group and only one AUC position for the STT \ group. No between groups significance was found. In conclusion there were signs of significant change of decreased muscle tonicity within the Fl group
