Abstract
This dissertation, aims to investigate whether the intricacy of osteopathic language used during a typical treatment in explaining the patient's condition to a tutor, should be broken down into laymen's terms and reiterated to the patient. Furthermore, it intends to explore whether patients are generally satisfied with their treatment progression. Method The purpose of this questionnaire is to investigate whether the general public understand the terminology used by osteopaths in the profession. In addition, is the public satisfied with theexplanation given to them in regards to the treatment outcome? In order to investigate this, a questionnaire was devised to encompass many questions relating to the title and was given to patients at the European School of Osteopathy. The questionnaire was designed with the main purpose of showing if there are any relevant associations between each question. A questionnaire was a reliable way to collect quantitative primary data, as it can be designed to sample a large group of individuals. Furthermore, by using a questionnaire the researcher had no physical contact with the subjects, therefore he could not influence the respondents' answers either deliberately or unintentionally. Comparatively, the data obtained through the questionnaire can be affected by the characteristics of the respondent, which can provide ambiguities in the questions and the respondents may provide inaccurate answers. Results The results show that 3 out of a possible I I hypothesis were accepted. Nevertheless, the study still managed to determine that the patients visiting the European School of Osteopathy are satisfied with the explanation explained to them during a treatment and that the more treatments they have the more osteopathic terminology is understood. Conclusion This dissertation has established that not all of the members of the general public are satisfied with the communication provided from their primary health care practitioners. Conclusively, communication is a fundamental component in primary health care, which should not be overlooked in any circumstance. Furthermore, by taking the time to explain to a patient why they could be presenting with their complaint is not only courteous but should also improve the patient'-practitioner relationship.
