Abstract
A study to determine the short term effects of an HVT to T4, Pericardia! visceral technique and combined technique on blood pressure and heart rate Introduction: Hypertension is common and linked with increased HR; both are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Many widely used hypertensive medications have side effects. Previous research suggests possible therapeutic benefits of HVT on T4; however an HVT is contraindicated in some circumstances. Whilst there is very little visceral research, promising treatment results have been shown. Could visceral technique influence BP and HR and is it more effective than an HVT? Would a combination of techniques increase effectiveness? This study aims to investigate. Method: A primary data gathering, double blinded, 4 grouped study of repeated measures design with intra-group and inter-group analysis. Results: HVT to T4 significantly influenced mean SBP and DBP (p<0.001) and altered SBP and DBP stability p<0.05), however did not significantly influence HR. Pericardia! viscera! Technique significantly influenced mean SBP and HR variability (p<0.05) and was significantly more effective at influencing HR variability than HVT technique (P<0.05). Combined technique was insignificant with regard to all data analysis. Discussion: This study shows that both an HVT to T4 and Pericardia! visceral release significantly influence aspects of BP and HR in the short term, however, a combined technique of both does not have any significance. Further research is needed to establish long term effects, technique influence on a Hypertensive population and to create a link between Osteopathic and mainstream modulation of Hypertension. Conclusion: HVT to T4 has been shown in this and previous research to significantly influence BP in the short term. This study has also created a foundation for further research into visceral techniques, showing significance in. short term influence on SBP and HR variability, both important factors in the moderation of cardiovascular disease.
