Abstract
This final project has been conducted as a pilot study in co-operation with the Helsinki University central hospital.
The objective of this study was to create a local osteopathic treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and evaluate its effect (of osteopathic techniques and wrist bracing) on the pain and symptom intensity of patients suffering from mild to mid-severe Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Patients were recruited from the Helsinki health care district and were included on the basis of positive ENMG- findings for CTS. Patients suffering from metabolic diseases predisposing to the syndrome were excluded. In all nine patients were selected and randomised into two treatment groups. Group 1 (n=4) received instructions to carry a wrist brace during a four week period mainly during the night. Patients in group 2 (n=5) were given six treatments including osteopathic techniques plus wrist braces mainly for use during the night. Group 2 was also instructed in wrist and neural tissue mobilisation exercises which they were asked to perform 3 to 5 times daily.

A Levine symptom evaluation questionnaire and visual analogue scale VAS were completed on initial assessment and a second time two months after randomisation.

The sample indicates a higher tendency of improvement in Levine and VAS results in group 1, as compared to group 2. Initial findings support the hypothesis that osteopathic techniques do have a capacity to alleviate symptoms of CTS.

Due to the small sample size any broader conclusions cannot be made. Patients with different degrees of severity were distributed unevenly into the two groups. Larger sample sizes are required to validate the effectiveness of mobilisation on the symptoms of CTS.
